Florida QSO Party 2001 |
The Florida QSO Party is held every year in April. It's an interesting contest, both for the out of state hams and the local guys, because a lot of mobiles are tooling around the state making sure that all the counties (multipliers) are heard on contest weekend. This year was my first attempt at FQP and I was surprised that I didn't work much DX, although a few DX stations were on the bands looking for Florida counties. But then again, with my antennas, I'm surprised I worked anybody..... We'll try again next year. Sorry, Europe, I won't be signing W4/KH2D/P - just look for KH2D if you want the SPAM. I'm also negtiotiating with Guam Supermarket to supply a few cases of HOT & SPICY SPAM (impregnated with Tabsco sauce, and only available in Guam and Saipan) so that should get the runs a little more lively than this year..... FQP has it's own web site, where you will find the rules, county information, results from previous years, and anything esle you'll need to know about the contest. |
Getting ready for the contest.
Notice the Secret Contest Hat I'm wearing. I wore this hat in every contest
I ever did from Guam, and wearing it guaranteed that I would work JA's
on every band I was on. Unfortunatly, for some strange reason, it doesn't
work from Florida....

When you have antennas as bad as mine,
you have to think of every trick in the book to get Q's in the log. But
like usual, I forgot to charge the battery on the cell phone, so that
didn't work either.....
|
Another gimmick that almost worked... Near the end of
the contest I had a bunch of stations frantically QSY'ing me from one band
to the other. I can't imagine any other reason than the fact that they wanted
the SPAM. Bad.... If you were one of the lucky contesters who did manage
to snag me on 4 bands, just enclose a SASB (self addressed stamped box)
with your QSL card and your SPAM will be on the way..... |
The big European runs just about wore me
out. Here I am after a terrific EU run on 20 meters... I worked YO4CBA,
G3LIK, and G3NNY all right in a row !! |
The 20 meter delta loop. You don't have to worry about
getting a nose bleed when you work on this puppy..... best part is it works
on 10 meters too! (not GOOD, but works). My other antenna is a 40 meter
dipole, but it's hidden in the tree on the left of this picture, so it's
hard to see. It's not up near as high as the 20 meter antenna, but it works
on 40 and also 15 meters (not GOOD, but works)...... |
