NeoSpeech and AT&T Natural Voice Dictionaries

Both the NeoSpeech and AT&T Natural Voices come with a user dictionary, which can be edited by the user of the TTS voices to improve the way voices speak certain phrases or fix minor quirks with the voices.

For example, the AT&T Natural Voices do not say the letter "W" correctly, instead they say "WEST". Who knows why, because they say the letters N, S, and E correctly. This can be corrected by making a simple user dictionary entry.

The dictionary is also the easiest way to teach the voices abbreviations they are not programmed to handle - tell the voice that if they see "mph" they should say "miles per hour".

NeoSpeech Voices

If you installed the NeoSpeech voices in the default directory, the dictionary is found here:

C:\program files\NeoSpeech\Kate16\data-common\userdict\user_eng.dict

Each NeoSpeech voice has it's own user dictionary, i.e., one for Kate and one for Paul.

The NeoSpeech user dictionaries, as supplied, contain an extensive amount of profanity, all of which has been changed to the word "BEEP", and some very weird Chinese words. Again, who knows why.

For editing simplicity, the profanity and Chinese have been removed from the NeoSpeech dictionary supplied here. You can download a modified NeoSpeech dictionary HERE.

If you would like to preserve what is in the original NeoSpeech user dictionary, then use this one to make the necessary changes to the one you have now. The few changes are necessary to make the NeoSpeech Voices speak call signs correctly.

There is a program that came with the NeoSpeech voices to edit the user dictionary, but it doesn't include all the necessary DLL's, so it won't work. The program is:

C:\program files\NeoSpeech\Kate16\lib\userengdic.exe

I have collected the necessary DLL's which you can download HERE. Unzip the file into the LIB folder where the editing program is, above.

Caution: A missing (or empty) user dictionary will cause the NeoSpeech voices to stop working.

ATT Natural Voices

If you installed the ATT Natural voices in the default directory, the dictionary is found here:

C:\program files\ATTNaturalVoices\TTS1.4\Desktop\data\en_us\en_us.dict

The editing program for the ATT Natural voices user dictionary can be found here:

C:\program files\ATTNaturalVoices\TTS1.4\Desktop\bin\WinDictEdite.exe

The ATT editing program works as supplied.

You can download a modified ATT dictionary HERE.

The modified ATT dictionary fixes the letters "W" and "A" as spoken in call signs.
